It’s been a dream season for D’Angelo Russell on the eve of free agency. He made the all-star team in the East, he’s leading the Nets back to the NBA playoffs. He threw a signature performance onto the pile of goodness on Tuesday, too: Russell scored 27 in the fourth quarter to lead a 28-point Nets comeback on the road against the Kings to get Brooklyn back above .500.
What is getting lost in the success of Russell’s season, is the fact that the Lakers gave up on him way too early. Russell didn’t get a real chance to blossom out in LA and when given the opportunity, Magic Johnson traded him cross country to Brooklyn.
Fast forward two seasons later, the Lakers are still a mess and the Nets are the franchise that is trending in the right direction. Recently, Los Angeles Clipper Lou Williams shared his opinion of about Russell and how the Lakers dropped the ball on his development.
Russell has been a significant player in the Nets turnaround, and the 22-year old appears to have a bright future ahead of him if he continues to improve at this current pace. Magic wouldn’t admit it but, he was wrong for betting against Russell. The one thing LeBron James could really use on the Lakers is a young, versatile, aggressive scoring point guard.
